NTL customer service

A phrase that used to be considerd an oxymoron. Personaly I have been suppried how good there support has been for my cable modem internet connection. Anyway, saying NTL are good is no fun what soever, so why not read a news story about how NTL customer service tells is customers to fuck off.

US spyware bill, and not a moment too soon

Looks like the yanks are trying to push thourh a few bills that will try to prevent spyware comanies insatlling software wihtout the users knowlege, gather information without there permissions or insatll software the is difficult to uninsatll. I also like the names they have come up with for the acts, wonder how long it took them to come up with acromymes that have "spy" in the title.

SPYWARE PRIVACY BILL ADVANCES IN SENATE

The Senate Commerce Committee has unanimously approved the Software Principles Yielding Better Levels of Consumer Knowledge (SPY BLOCK) Act, an anti-spyware bill which would prohibit the surreptitious installation of software on computers. If approved by the full Senate, the legislation will not allow software vendors to use misleading means to induce consumers to install software, prohibit software that prevents reasonable efforts to uninstall or disable it, and outlaw installing software that automatically collects and transmits information about the user without permission.

In June, the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed a similar anti-spyware bill entitled the Securely Protect Yourself Against Cyber Trespass Act (SPY Act).

Another calss post from b3ta

"but seeing as other seem to be posting accidental Dad humour, then why the hell not?

People of the older generation are of course funny, especially when, unaccustomed to the Way in which Young People Speak, they hilariously juxtapose words to create shiny new meanings. Which are, inevitably, even funnier when rude.

My step-dad is the kind of person who refers to postmen (people ) as 'posty', so one morning, as I was innocently tucking my Corn Flakes, enter Step-dad in search of milk.

Says he 'Milky come this morning?'.

It is I think to my eternal credit that I only raised my eyebrows slightly."

Whats the point in...

... having an alarm if its dissabled?

Greco-Roman wrestling

I know most blokes watched the Olymics for the ladies beach voleyball but you may have missed out on the real higlight.

the Greco-Roman Wrestling, possiblay the gay-est thing a man can do.

In this form of wrestling if you are taken to the mat you must assume the "submissive position" that is more of the rules then I needed to know. I think you just sped the wrest of the match simulating red hot man on man sex like this and this.

QED gay as you like.

Up up and away...

...with my worrying ballons

My final word on PC security

In a moment of madness I have written a document, based on my
preivous posts, on kepping your home PC secure. Have a read, let me
know what you think if you like.

Home PC security, or the boring business of being secure

Yet more PC secuiryt tips

Always carry a spare... web broswer that is.

On the internet these days Microsoft's internet explorer is a Necessary evil,
there are a lot of website that simply don’t work very well without it.
That is, of course because it is the most popular browser. Its popularity
also means that it is a constant target for hackers, browser hijacks and so
forth.

If you have ever had your browser hijacked with popup adverts flashing up
every 2 seconds then you will know what a pain this is. So, always pack a s
pare.

There are a couple of really good browsers you can get for free:

Opera

Exelent, quick browser but if you want to use the free version you have
to put up with an small advert window at the top of the page, no big deal

Firefox

Brought to you by the same people that made Netscape Navigator. Also a good
browser that also offers tabbed browsing.

The advantage of having a second browser is two fold:

1) If you main browser gets hijacked or in some other way broken by
malicious software then it can be difficult to fix because you cant get
to the websites you need to fix it. This is where your second browser
comes in very handy.

2) While these browsers are not necessarily more secure, most of the
malicious software out there is written for Internet Explorer. This can
come in very handy if you are going to websites that are not trusted by
you (such as news.bbc.com or perhaps you banks website, we can trust they w
ill not infect us with malicious software)

So, dont wait until your browser has become un-usable, install one today,
just in case.

Not had a Jacko one in a while

Further PC security stuff

OK, I did a free virus scan the other day, and a free spyware removal tool a few days before that, today I am going to cover:

IPS and Firewall

IPS

IPS stands for Intrustion Prevention System. This bit of sofware runs in the background on your computer looking for changes to your system. When it detects somting, lets say, a change to your registry, it pops up and asks you if you realy want to change it. This should protect you from most broswer highjacks. It has a whole raft of other fetures that protect you from buffer overflows and shuch. Have a read of the site to get a better idea.

Prevx - Home & Home Office

Fire Wall

OK, I think you all should know what a fire wall is, and you should definalty be running one by now. Service pack 2 for windows XP improves on windows statefull firewall with added features, but you may want to run one written by another company. So, this is the one that I use.

Sygate Personal Firewall

Both of these products have to ask you questions. For instance when you install some new software privex will check that parts of the install are ok to install. If the software you install conects to the internet the firewall will check with you that it is ok for that to happen. This is all done by means of pop up windows that can get annoying. No matter how annoying this gets, DONT TURN THEM OFF they are the only thing standing between you and a pc full of spyware with the wrong home page with toolbars that you didnt add.

So, to round up. Here is the software I have sugested:

Spyware removal - Spy Sweeper
Antivirus - AVG
Intrustion Prevention - Prevx - Home & Home Office
Firewall - Sygate Personal Firewall

With this lot installed you should sugnificanlty decrease the chances of having your computer screwed over, but the only way to be sure, don't connect it to the internet. but wheres the fun in that.

OXO tower review

I had a look at some of the old links on thebrownhaze and notieced that this exelent review for the oxo tower had been removed. So I have placed it here for posteirty.

When my boyfriend told me he wanted to take me up the Oxo Tower for my birthday, I was a bit hesitant at first because I didn't really think it was my scene. How wrong I was! I mean, yeah, so it's a bit of a strain on the old back pocket, and I admit I did feel a bit uncomfortable initially. But a couple of cocktails helped me relax and soon I was really getting into it - we carried on well into the night. It was a great experience and I really loved it - so much so that I won't let my boyfriend take me anywhere else now! So if anyone ever wants to take you up the Oxo Tower, just throw caution to the wind and go for it!

But, while looking I did find the real review, tee hee

have to agree with the majority of people above..... I've had a great time up on the tower, especially on a sunny day in London with the sun beating down on me and the view spread below.

Dead funny dentist joke

Jesus

sounds nasty

blagged from the board a b3ta.com

"heard that you could open wide enough to fit a lightbulb, big end first, inside your mouth but once you got it in there you couldn't get it out without either breaking it (bad) or dislocating your jaw (very bad).

Naturally she assumed this wasn't true so tested the theory by unscrewing a lightbulb and trying it out. Unfortunatly for her, what she thought was urban legend was is actually urban fact - you really can't get a lightbulb out of your mouth after you have put in there. Cue one embarrassing taxi journey to the hospital ('where you you like to go luv?' 'eh ouspial!!!') with the taxi driver laughing all the way.

As a post script to this, after about an hour or so the bulb was finally removed by medical professionals and my friend's little sister was free to go. On walking out of the hospital who should she see? (I swear this is true). The taxi driver who brought her to hospital sitting in A&E looking very embarressed with a lightbulb in his mouth!"

You couldnt make this stuff up...

... only in America

A 15-year-old girl has been arrested for taking nude photographs of her self and posting them on the Internet

To make matters more bizzare she has been charged with sexual abuse of children, IE herself. Can you do that?

perhaps they should put one of those new peedo electroic tags to make sure she dosent come within 500 yards of herself.

Anti Virus

Ok, I did the spyware removal software the other day, now its the trun of free antivrus.

Grisoft Freeweb: Get Your AVG for free!

I have not tried it yet, but it has recvied some pretty good reviews, so I think I will install it at some point, perhaps this weekend.

Games for the girls

This news story off the BBC says that the games industry should be gearing more towrds games for girls. According to this story girls with like games if they are not very compicated and you dont die in them. Woah, that sounds like fun.

Why dont they just start making games for people that dont like games.
